Around the time of the G8 Conference in 2005, the D8 group was set up to discuss and work with development issues in the UK and internationally. The aim is to bring to the congregation such issues as peace, poverty, the environment, human rights, human trafficking and Fair Trade, using sermons, intercessions, DVDs, articles in Inspire, displays and sketches. A Fair Trade stall is held after the Sunday morning service about once a month. Other activities have included the alternative Christmas Card appeal for St George’s (Cape Town) HIV/Aids carers, a variety of fundraising events for Christian Aid (e.g. pea and pie supper and quiz, raffle on Fun Day) and a visit to York to see the anti-slavery play. Future plans, being discussed now, include St John’s as an Eco Church and learning about other religions.
