Choral Scholarships
St John's has four Choral Scholarships available to students. The Scholars play an active part in the Church's musical life, singing in both the Parish and Chamber Choirs. Individual tuition is available, and there is the opportunity to sing in recitals and concerts in Church. There are also opportunities to help with the administration of the music.
The Scholarships are currently worth in the region of £400 per year (payable in two instalments in December and June). We have a vacancy for the current academic year, and would particularly welcome interest from countertenors. The Director of Music is always happy to hear from prospective Scholars.
Organ Scholarships
There are opportunities for organ students to be involved in the music of the Church as Organ Scholars, which are designed to prepare a young organist for further work in church music. Scholarships are worth between £200 and £500 per annum, depending on experience.
The Organ Scholars play or conduct regularly depending on their experience. The precise nature of the role is tailored very much by the Scholar according to what he or she wants to achieve from the position. However, both Scholars are expected to take an active role in all the aspects of St John's musical life.
The Organ Scholars are expected to attend most rehearsals, and to take an active part in providing training for the boys and young men, particularly in preparing them for awards. Depending on the level of experience of the Scholar, they will accompany the choir and direct it in Sunday services on a regular basis (under the guidance of the Director of Music).
Further information about the positions can be had from the Director of Music.
